6 Short Films: Sister Works to Amplified Edition No. 2

Hanna Gillgren

A series of 6 short experimental films documenting a live work from the inside.

A series of 6 short experimental films documenting a live work from the inside. Through July to September 2021, Hanna Gillgren collaborated with screen dance practitioner Jo Cork to research the potential of digital practices within H2DANCE’s work.

Hanna brought the camera in from the start of the rehearsal process for the live-work Amplified Edition No. 2, and through the eye of the camera, worked in an improvisational way to create footage. This was followed by reflection, training and investigation in the editing and post-production process with Jo. The aim was to find ways of documenting process rather than product, and finding out how the digital can become part of, and influence future projects. The research culminated in 6 short experimental dance films, sitting as sister works to the live piece.

Amplified Edition No. 2 is the second part of the Amplified Edition series which looks at the relation between body, material, sound and site. The first edition was performed in a black box theatre and utilised the existing objects and materials of the space. Amplified Edition No. 2 continues the series by investigating utilitarian and omnipresent plastic sheeting. Using tarpaulin, a cheap everyday material as the prime choreographic material, the work is built around five chapters that are performed in a gallery context. Material and sound from each chapter accumulate throughout, creating transformative sound environments as a result of each performance activation. Using their voices, the performers create vocal choreographic landscapes, that stretch, slow down, speed up, break apart, distract and crash into one another, never quite reaching harmony.
